The carvings in this collection depict devatas, the semi-divine beings, usually female, the guardians of sanctuaries at the Angkor temples. They are always shown standing, often holding a lotus flower, but sometimes holding a mirror, or linking arms with other devatas in groups. There are thousands of devatas carved at the Angkor temples, with more than 1800 at Angkor Wat alone. The devatas of Angkor Wat temple are in the "Cambodia - Angkor Wat Devatas" collection. Devatas should not be confused with apsaras, which are celestial nymphs, represented flying through the air, or dancing. For images of apsaras, see the "Cambodia - Angkor Apsaras" collection.
